1Z10 Photo of the Year 2022

Scoop 1st: Duncan McEvoy

37418 returns inspection saloon Caroline back to York at the end of a 2Z02 trip to Berwick upon Tweed, outward via Settle and Carlisle and then the Tyne Valley to Newcastle. A long 12 hour day out, it would seem most participants of this Network Rail outing have opted out of the return by the time it has reached Newcastle. Here near journeys end at York, the train speeds along the East Coast Main Line four track just south of Tollerton at the end of a 30 degree day, August the 10th 2022.

This was the first HST down the full length of the Cumbrian Coast for many a year so worth going out for. Here we see the 110 minute late monthly 1Q18 Carlisle - Blackpool tester operated by Colas power cars 43257 & 43521 aHarrington, south of Workington on August 11th 2022. Despite being well into their forties and considered "classics" by some, the use of these Colas power cars will reduce the chances of seeing 37s out and about so have not been universally welcomed around here.

The first working of a trial log train trial run from Aberystwyth in 2022 and following on from the approach shot previously uploaded.

97304 "John Tiley" and 97303 "Dave Berry" are on the sharp end with 6C55, the 19:56 Aberystwyth Run Round Loop to Chirk Kronospan, skirting the River Dovey and nearing Dovey Junction in low light, Friday 29/4/22.

There was a trial running logs from Aberystwyth back in 2005, but strangely, it was top and tailed by MPV’s.

On the return from the annual 1Z10 trip to Scotland a number of us chose to photograph the diverted East Coast mainline trains on the picturesque Tyne Valley line in lieu of the more popular steam railtours over Shap that day. Here an unidentified Azuma passes Haltwhistle in the early afternoon of Saturday 24th September, working 1S08 08:32 London Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley.

6X43 Toton - Burton Wetmore, the first (??) run for HST power cars with a freight. They had previously been out on a Class 6 run with barriers rather than freight wagons (and are due again tomorrow, thanks to gen providers).

1Z10 compeRRon - category 'scoop'. First run, I think, ever for HST power cars and freight (as opposed to barrier wagons for unit moves).

A pure reflection shot using the Birmingham & Warwick Junction Canal of 66303 Rail Riders waiting for the right away from Duddeston Junction at Saltley on 21 June 2022. The 66 was

working 4Z92 South Bank to Daventry; Tesco Company train severely delayed by a points failure at Kingsbury.

The illumination of the underside of the bridge was the initial draw here. Constant drips from the adjacent railway bridge lightly disturbing the surface of the water were timed to give some extra texture without losing too much clarity in the reflection.

A train approaches St Enoch station on the Glasgow Underground. In the original photograph the light on the front of the train can be seen but there was no light beam. Photoshop was used to create the light beam artificially. 22nd September 2022.

At the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds escarpment, 68027 'Splendid' is seen near Seamer on the outskirts of Scarborough with a Trans-Pennine Express service on 12 November 2022.

The image was taken at sunset with the last light hitting the side of the train. The train was then selectively coloured and the rest of the image de-saturated. Photoshop sky replacement tool was then used to give the image a more dramatic sky.

Toton Scrap Line 21/1/2022

VegetaRon and dumped wagons got in the way for some years, now is a chance to walk along the scrap line - no fancy liveries in easy view though.

1Z10 competition - 'creative'. For a short while the wagons and vegetaRon were cleared so you could walk along and photograph the scrap line through the fence. I think the 60s have since been moved on. Each image cropped and put together as if models on shelves.

Northern Rail Class 195 No. 195019 calls at Hathersage in the Peak District with 2S87, the 15:46 Sheffield – Manchester Piccadilly service on 28th November 2022.

This view of the railway stretching out into the Hope Valley is glimpsed as one drives below Millstone Edge on the road from Sheffield, dropping down into Hathersage. The sun had just set behind a hill to the left and the air was both still and very cold. I was heading home from a landscape photo shoot in Padley Gorge near Grindleford and realised that there was a possibility of a shot from this high vantage point. I parked the car, grabbed my camera bag and tripod and quickly found this viewpoint. A quick check on RealTimeTrains showed the train pictured due in about 5 minutes so I quickly set up my camera on the tripod and took a couple of test shots to get the correct exposure especially as light was fading fast. While setting up the camera the smoke started rising from a fire on the right of the picture but because of the very still cold air, didn't rise but drifted from right to left across the frame. The train duly arrived on time and the result is as you see here.

66737 leaving North Blyth 11/8/2022

The long journey to Fort William for 6E45starts with a run in golden early morning sunshine, past Battleship Wharf. For those who like dog walkers in shot, there is one on the beach almost level with the train. But too far away to add significant human interest!

1Z10 competition, category 'in context'. Single frame image, this didn't require two images stitched together, the low light meant the sky and ground weren't too far apart in light levels.

DB Cargo Class 66 No. 66065 draws into the run round sidings at Cwmbargoed Opencast Colliery on a wet and misty early morning with 4C93, the coal empties from Port Talbot steel works on 27th October 2022.

Camera; Nikon Z7 with Nikkor Z 24-70mm lens at 56mm, 1/200s at f/4.0 and ISO1600

An early alarm was required to get up and drive to this remote opencast colliery located high above Merthyr Tydfil in the Welsh Valleys before this early morning arrival. The journey up there was wet, cold and misty and I did wonder why I was making the effort so early in the morning. With light almost none existent I didn't hold out much hope for a decent shot but having made the effort to get there persevered. Fortunately the train arrived while the lights were still switched on and they gave just enough light to capture the photograph you see, enhanced by the mist and fog. Minutes later the lights were switched off and the mist dissipated.
